Next week’s Eagles Cowboys division deciding match-up looks a lot different now that ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported Tony Romo will not be playing in it. The Cowboys quarterback seemingly hurt himself on the last drive of the game against the Redskins. He was able to stay in the game and drive down the field to win the game, but you could tell he was hurting. Romo was diagnosed with a herniated disk after the game, and despite, Jerry Jones assuring Romo would play in the game, Schefter has reported otherwise.
The injury will require surgery at some point, making it highly unlikely Romo finds a way to play the game. Cowboys have yet to rule Romo out, but considering the severity of the injury he isn’t going to be playing. Romo was having a good season for the Cowboys, with almost 4000 yards and 31 touchdowns.
The Cowboys backup QB is Kyle Orton. Orton hasn’t played in a game since week 17 of the 2011 season, where he lead the Chiefs to a 7-3 win over the Broncos, though he only threw for 180 yards. He had played for the Broncos and Bears before that. Cowboys head coach Jason Garret was not short on praise for Orton following the news about Romo.
“He played the quarterback position the way it’s supposed to be played,” Garrett said to ESPN. “He understands what you’re trying to do on offense. He understands defenses. He knows where the ball needs to go. He has a poise and a calmness and a composure about him of a veteran player.”
Orton has 81 touchdowns and 74 interceptions, though he hasn’t seen much playing time since signing with the Cowboys two years ago.
The Cowboys will play the Eagles in Dallas Sunday night in a game that will decide who wins the NFC East. Eagles (9-6) currently have a one-game-lead over the Cowboys (8-7). Despite the lead, if the Cowboys win, bringing the records to a tie, the Cowboys would have the tiebreaker thanks to sweeping the eagles in the season series.
Vegas favors the Eagles to win by 7.5 points. The Eagles were favored by 3.5 points before the news about Romo’s injury.
